National & International Leadership


  • Served as President of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP).

  • Appointed as Chairman of the Section on Socioeconomic Statistics for the National Statistical Commission, Government of India.

  • Acted as Chairman of a group established by WHO and UNFPA to review and advise on Population Research Centres in China.

  • Worked with the United Nations Population Division (ESCAP, Bangkok), contributing to population research across various developing countries.


Expert Advisory Roles


  • Served on high-level expert committees for the Planning Commission, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, and the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India.

  • Member of the Population Policy Formulation Committees for the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

  • Currently serves as a member of the committee on the Sample Registration System (SRS), set up by the Registrar General of India.


Major Contributions & Recognition


  • Played an instrumental role in establishing the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) in India.

  • Recipient of numerous honors, including:

    • Scroll of Honour from the People’s Republic of China (1983).

    • Ved Prakash Memorial Award from NIHFW, New Delhi (1995).

    • Fellowship by the Indian Society for Medical Statistics (1992).

  • Authored 13 books and more than 100 academic articles on critical issues such as Population and Development, Family Planning, and Fertility.

  • Experienced in training students from various Asian countries in population studies.
