President, the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) Chairman, Section on Socioeconomic Statistics of the National Statistical Commission, Govt of India Population and Health Committee, the Planning Commission, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India Chairman of Group set up by WHO and UNFPA to review and recommend on PRCs in China Member of Population Policy Formulation Committee set up by state Govts of UP and MP Currently, member of the committee on Sample Registration System set up by Registrar General of India

Contributed to research in the field of Population Studies in various developing countries under the auspices of the United Nations. Was with Population Division of the United Nations at ESCAP office, Bangkok

Recipient of a number of honours including the Scroll of Honour from the People’s Republic of China for his assistance in strengthening of the Population Research Centres in 1983.  Recipient of VedPrakash Memorial award from NIHFW, New Delhi in 1995 and was conferred Fellowship by the Indian Society for Medical Statistics in 1992

Instrumental in starting the NFHS in India. Trained students from various Asian countries 

Authored 13 books and more than 103 articles / papers on several issues including Population and Development, Family Welfare, Family Planning, Contraception and Fertility …
